Overview
Bruneck is the largest city in the Puster Valley (Pustertal) in the Italian province of South Tyrol. It serves as the main town of the valley, a hub for the surrounding Alpine communities and a popular base for the Dolomites. The town is trilingual in character, reflecting its German, Italian and Ladin populations.
History
Brunico developed around a castle built by the prince-bishops of Brixen, who controlled the Puster Valley in the Middle Ages. The fortified town grew along its main street as a market and administrative centre. For centuries it lay within the Tyrolean and Habsburg sphere, passing to Italy after the First World War.
What you see
Bruneck Castle (Schloss Bruneck) crowns the hill above the old town and today houses one of the Messner Mountain Museums. The arcaded Stadtgasse, the historic main street, is lined with painted facades and shops. Around the town rise the peaks of the Puster Valley and the gateways to the Dolomites.
Cultural significance
As the capital of the Puster Valley, Brunico is a centre of South Tyrolean and Ladin culture, language and tradition. Its castle museum and well-preserved medieval core make it a key heritage destination in the eastern Alps.
Practical information
The historic centre and Stadtgasse are freely walkable year-round. For castle and museum opening times and events, check the official websites of the town and the Messner Mountain Museum.
Getting there
Brunico is served by the Pustertal railway line linking Fortezza/Franzensfeste with San Candido and the Austrian border, with regional train and bus connections. By car it is reached via the SS49 road through the Puster Valley.
