Spinelli Palace
A Renaissance palace in the heart of Florence, designed by Bernardo Rossellino and now home to Italy’s foremost institute dedicated to art conservation and restoration.
At a glance
Spinelli Palace stands on Borgo Santa Croce as a testament to 15th-century Florentine patronage and Renaissance architectural ambition. Built between 1460 and 1470 for the merchant Tommaso Spinelli, the palace was designed by master architect Bernardo Rossellino. Today it serves as the headquarters of the Institute for Art and Restoration, a center of excellence in cultural heritage conservation.
History
Commissioned by Tommaso Spinelli during the height of Florence’s commercial power, the palace was constructed over a decade under the direction of Rossellino, one of the Renaissance’s most accomplished architects. The building was later known as the Ridolfi Zanchini Palace before returning to its original name.
In 1976, Francesco Amodei and Sauro Martini—two childhood friends inspired by Florence’s experience during the catastrophic 1966 flood—established the Institute for Art and Restoration within the palace. The choice of location was symbolic: a Renaissance masterpiece would now dedicate itself to preserving the world’s cultural heritage.
What you see
Rossellino’s design reflects the refined taste of Florentine quattrocento patronage. The palace exemplifies the architectural principles that defined the early Renaissance period in the city.
Cultural significance
Spinelli Palace represents both the artistic achievements of Renaissance Florence and the city’s commitment to conservation in the modern era. The Institute for Art and Restoration operates as a training center, research facility, and professional consultancy, working with public and private institutions worldwide on the conservation of cultural heritage.
