Museo Casina delle Civette

A refined early-20th-century villa transformed from a Romantic alpine lodge, now a museum showcasing the evolution of domestic taste and decorative arts.

At a glance

The Casina delle Civette (Little House of the Owls) consists of two connected structures—a main villa and a secondary building—linked by a wooden gallery and underground passage. Though rooted in 19th-century Romantic aesthetics, the complex underwent radical transformation beginning in 1908, emerging as an ornate medieval-inspired residence.

History

The original Capanna Svizzera (Swiss Cabin) was conceived in the 19th century by Jappelli as a rustic alpine retreat. From 1908 onwards, Giovanni Torlonia jr.—nephew of Alessandro—commissioned a sweeping renovation directed by architect Enrico Gennari. The small building metamorphosed into a sophisticated residence renamed the “Villaggio Medioevale” (Medieval Village), preserving only the fundamental L-shaped masonry layout and deliberately rustic character of its predecessor.

What you see

The villa displays deliberate eclecticism: large windows, loggias, porticoes, and turrets compose its exterior, while majolica tiles and coloured glass panels provide ornamental detail. Varied materials remain exposed, a conscious choice echoing the original structure’s rougher aesthetic. The pitched-roof design links both phases of the building’s identity—from alpine lodge to refined domestic space.

Cultural significance

The Casina delle Civette exemplifies early-20th-century Roman villa culture and the tastes of the Torlonia family. Its architectural palimpsest reveals shifting attitudes toward the Romantic countryside ideal versus modern comfort and sophistication. Today it functions as a museum documenting these aesthetic transitions through its own walls.
