Belluno Dolomites National Park
A vast protected landscape in the Dolomites, encompassing dramatic limestone peaks and alpine meadows across the province of Belluno in northern Veneto.
At a glance
The Belluno Dolomites National Park protects one of Europe’s most distinctive mountain environments. Covering over 31,000 hectares of alpine terrain, the park preserves the natural and geological character of this UNESCO World Heritage region.
History
Planning for the national park began in 1988, with formal establishment through the Ministry of the Environment in 1990. A park manager was appointed in 1993. The original protected area encompassed 15,030 hectares; subsequent expansion enlarged it to its current size of 31,512 hectares.
In 2008, the park’s boundaries were redefined with greater precision using detailed 1:25,000 scale cartography and supporting technical maps, replacing the earlier 1:100,000 scale designations. This ensured clear demarcation along natural features such as ridges, rivers, and roads.
What you see
The landscape comprises the characteristic limestone formations of the Dolomites—jagged peaks, deep valleys, and high plateaus. Alpine meadows, forested slopes, and geological formations illustrate the region’s complex tectonic and erosional history.
Cultural significance
The Dolomites, including this park, were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 for their outstanding natural beauty and geological importance. The landscape reflects millions of years of mountain-building processes and contains paleontological evidence of ancient marine ecosystems.
