Red Beach
Kokkini Paralia — the Red Beach — is one of the most visually arresting stretches of shoreline in the Aegean. The crimson sand and towering rust-red cliffs are iron oxide made physical: the direct geological residue of Santorini's volcanic catastrophe c. 1600 BC.
At a glance
Red Beach sits at the southern end of Santorini, 500 metres from the Akrotiri archaeological site. The beach is small — roughly 100 metres of shoreline — but its scale of colour is outsized. The cliffs rise to 60 metres in places, stained deep red and rust by iron oxide minerals oxidised under the heat of ancient volcanic activity. The sand itself is a mix of crushed red volcanic rock and dark basalt fragments. Swimming here, you are physically immersed in the island's geological history.

History
The Red Beach is geology rather than history. The iron-rich volcanic minerals that colour the cliffs were deposited during the extended volcanic activity that shaped Santorini over millennia, culminating in the Minoan eruption c. 1600 BC. The specific red colouration results from haematite and other iron oxides formed when molten volcanic material oxidised in contact with the atmosphere. Subsequent erosion has exposed the layered geological record in the cliff face, reading like a cross-section of the island's volcanic biography.
The beach has no ancient settlement or monument history. Its significance is entirely natural.
What you see
The approach along the coastal path gives the first view of the cliffs from above before descending to beach level. At the waterline, the sand ranges from deep crimson to rust orange; in the afternoon sun, the entire bay glows with a warmth that photographs rarely capture accurately. The sea here is notably clear, and the contrast between the red geology and the turquoise water is the thing visitors remember.
Rock falls from the cliffs are a periodic hazard; avoid sitting directly beneath the cliff faces.
Practical information
- Free access; sun lounger hire available on the beach
- No lifeguard; swimming at own risk
- Access path is rocky and uneven; suitable footwear required
- Can also be reached by boat from the small pier at Akrotiri village
- Combine with Akrotiri archaeological site (500 m); plan a half-day
Getting there
Red Beach is 12 km from Fira. Drive or take the KTEL bus to Akrotiri village, then walk 10 minutes along the coastal path. The path is clearly marked but rocky; trekking sandals recommended over bare feet or flip-flops.
