Eyewear Museum

A remarkable collection of over 3,000 pairs of eyeglasses and optical instruments traces the evolution of vision correction and the industrial heritage of the Cadore region from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.

At a glance

The Eyewear Museum preserves one of the world’s most extensive collections of historical spectacles, lenses, and optical devices. Its holdings span from medieval times through the 1900s, documenting both technological advancement and the craftsmanship that made Cadore a centre of eyewear manufacturing. The museum occupies a contemporary building adjacent to the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Tiziano Vecellio.

History

The museum’s origins trace to the 1950s, when doctor and archaeologist Enrico De Lotto first envisioned a collection dedicated to eyewear history. Vittorio Tabacchi, president of the Safilo company, developed and realised this concept. The museum opened to the public in 1990. Since 1996, it has been administered by the Eyewear Museum Foundation (Onlus). In 2007, the collection relocated to its current purpose-built facility in the historic centre of Pieve di Cadore.

What you see

The museum displays more than 3,000 pairs of glasses alongside optical instruments, lenses, and related accessories. Exhibits are arranged to illustrate both the technical evolution of eyewear and the aesthetic transformations across centuries. Spectacles range from early corrective devices to twentieth-century frames, revealing how vision correction became increasingly refined and accessible.

Cultural significance

The collection represents a distinctive chapter in European industrial history. Cadore’s eyewear industry transformed the region economically and culturally, establishing it as a global centre of optical production. The museum documents this heritage while exploring the universal human need to correct vision—a need that shaped craft traditions, entrepreneurship, and material innovation across generations.
