Fava-Ghisilieri Palace

A Renaissance palazzo in Bologna that became a canvas for the Carracci family’s celebrated frescoes, now home to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni.

At a glance

Fava-Ghisilieri Palace stands as a testament to Renaissance patronage and artistic ambition. The building houses the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, including the Carracci Fava Literary Café, making it both a historical monument and a contemporary cultural venue.

History

The palazzo took its Renaissance form under the stewardship of Filippo Fava, whose advantageous marriage to Ginevra Orsi provided the financial means for significant improvements. In 1584, Fava engaged the Carracci workshop—introduced through his tailor Antonio Carracci, father of the celebrated painters Agostino and Annibale—to undertake an ambitious decorative programme.

What you see

The three rooms on the palazzo’s noble floor bear witness to the Carraccis’ distinctive artistic vision. Their frescoes illustrate the myth of Jason, the abduction of Europa, and episodes from Virgil’s Aeneid, executed as elaborate friezes that command the walls. These decorations represent some of the finest late-Renaissance fresco work in the city.

Cultural significance

The Carracci frescoes at Fava-Ghisilieri Palace exemplify the artistic patronage that defined Bologna’s Renaissance flowering. The commission marked an important moment in the careers of Agostino and Annibale Carracci, whose work would profoundly influence Italian Baroque painting. The palazzo remains a vital document of how mercantile families transformed their residences into galleries of intellectual and artistic ambition.
