Built in 1545 for Marquis Domenico Grillo above earlier commercial loggias, the palace was dramatically transformed between 1560 and 1561. Giovan Battista Castello, called il Bergamasco, and Bernardo Spazio redesigned the facade and decorated the interior rooms with frescoed narratives and architectural embellishment. The building appears on the Rolli of Genoa—the historic register of aristocratic residences opened to visiting dignitaries.
History
The palace originated as an enlargement of property above the loggias of three merchant families: Grillo, Negrone, and Vivaldi. Marquis Domenico Grillo commissioned the initial construction in 1545. Five years later, il Bergamasco and Spazio undertook a comprehensive renovation, enriching the exterior with marble work and introducing ambitious fresco cycles throughout the interior. The facade ornaments, once a highlight of Piazza delle Vigne, deteriorated significantly over centuries but were restored in 2001 ahead of the G8 summit.
What you see
The facade facing Piazza delle Vigne showcases il Bergamasco’s sophisticated interplay of solid architectural forms and void spaces created by tympanums, string courses, and a portal articulated with fluted columns. Marble cladding and frescoed decoration once gave the elevation a monumental yet airy character, now largely restored.
The interior plan works ingeniously within tight spatial constraints. A modest atrium and staircase serve as the organizational pivot for the whole residence. From the ground-floor loggia opening onto the entrance, the design conducts visitors upward through passages marked by columns, balustrades, and cross vaults decorated with frescoes that echo the grandeur of sixteenth-century Genoese palaces.
Pictorial cycles animate the principal rooms: the Sacrifice of Iphigenia and Stories of Psyche figure among the most admired interior adornments.

Domenico Grillo Palace exemplifies the cosmopolitan ambitions of Genoese merchant nobility in the Renaissance. Its registration in the Rolli acknowledged it as worthy of receiving important visitors and diplomats. The collaboration between il Bergamasco—an influential designer who worked across northern Italy—and the local architect Spazio reflects Genoa’s position as a hub where regional and international artistic currents converged.
