Bologna Fair

A major European exhibition center in the San Donato district, Bologna Fair anchors a regional network of trade shows spanning over two centuries of commercial display.

At a glance

The Bologna Fair is the primary exhibition venue for Bologna and its metropolitan area, situated in the northern San Donato district near the city ring road. Today it operates as part of a three-center regional system managed by Bolognafiere Spa, encompassing roughly 200,000 square meters across Bologna, Modena, and Ferrara.

History

Formal exhibition culture in Bologna began in 1888 with the “Great Emilian Exhibition” in the Margherita Gardens, inaugurated by King Umberto I, Queen Margherita of Savoy, and Prime Minister Francesco Crispi. The first dedicated Bologna exhibition followed in 1901 at the EDEN Kursal premises on Via Indipendenza.

Planning for a permanent fairground commenced in the 1950s. Architects Leonardo Benevolo, Tommaso Giura Longo, and Carlo Melograni won the design competition. Construction began in 1964 with the cornerstone laying; the following year, the 29th Bologna Trade Fair inaugurated in its new permanent home—the first fair held at the fixed location.

Expansion accelerated through subsequent decades. Japanese architect Kenzō Tange designed major additions in 1972, including the Fiera District office complex with skyscrapers reaching up to 80 meters (completed 2011). From the 2000s onward, Pierluigi Cerri and Di Gregorio Associati directed further modernization, adding pavilions and covered spaces between 2004 and 2008.

What you see

The fairground comprises multiple pavilion generations. The original 1964–65 core includes Pavilions 21, 22, 25, 26, 31, and 32. Tange’s 1972 contributions introduced modernist forms alongside the adjacent high-rise Fiera District, whose tallest tower dominates the skyline at 80 meters.

Early 2000s improvements by Cerri added Pavilions 16–18 (2004) and 14–15 (2008), along with rebuilt Pavilions 29 and 30, significantly expanding covered exhibition space across the campus.

Cultural significance

Bologna Fair represents Italy’s long tradition of commercial display and industrial networking. From nineteenth-century royal patronage through Cold War modernization to contemporary trade infrastructure, the fairground reflects changing exhibition practices and architectural ambitions spanning generations.
