Lazio Region

Central Italy’s capital region, home to Rome and Vatican City, bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Apennines to the east.

At a glance

Lazio is a region of ordinary statute in central Italy, with Rome as its administrative capital. The region stretches from the lower Tiber River valley westward to the Tyrrhenian coast, and eastward to the central Apennines. Within its borders lies Vatican City, a sovereign enclave. Lazio borders Tuscany, Umbria, the Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, and Campania across its terrestrial edges.

History

Lazio existed as a geographical and statistical entity long before its formal institutional establishment. The Republican Constitution of 1947 created the Lazio Region as a territorial body. From 1 January 1948, under Article 131 of the Constitution, Lazio became a region with ordinary autonomy within the Italian Republic. However, the first representative regional councils were not elected until 1970, when law n. 281 implemented the region’s full functions.

What you see

Lazio comprises five administrative divisions: the provinces of Frosinone, Latina, Rieti, and Viterbo, alongside the metropolitan city of Roma Capitale. Each province maintains its own identity and governance within the regional framework. The landscape ranges from coastal plains along the Tyrrhenian Sea to mountain terrain in the east.

Cultural significance

As Italy’s central region and home to the capital, Lazio holds paramount importance in Italian political, cultural, and historical life. The presence of Rome—seat of government and papal residence—makes Lazio a focal point of European civilization. The region encapsulates millennia of history, from ancient Roman foundations to Renaissance and modern developments.
