Antica Trattoria Bagutto
Italy’s oldest restaurant, documented since 1284, stands on the eastern outskirts of Milan as a working monument to centuries of hospitality and culinary tradition.
At a glance
Antica Trattoria Bagutto occupies a historic site on the Paullese road, a Roman-era route connecting Milan and Cremona. Its name—derived from the Lombard term Berlochium, meaning “place where you eat”—first appeared in a land-exchange document dated 1284, making it the oldest continuously documented restaurant in Italy and the second oldest in Europe after Salzburg’s Stiftskeller St. Peter.
History
The structure originally stood in the now-vanished municipality of Morsenchio, on the banks of the Naviglio or Molinara Canal, where mills dotted the landscape. From the fifteenth century, the charitable organization Posto pio delle Quattro Marie held ownership and the tavern adopted successive names: Hosteria dei Gamberi in the 1400s, and by 1580, Hostaria delle Quattro Marie alla Canova, after the nearby farm under the same patronage.
The property changed hands repeatedly. The Durini counts acquired it in the early eighteenth century, followed by the Ranieri family and the Merlini family in 1780. Historical records suggest Napoleon I dined here in 1807 when he appointed Francesco Melzi d’Eril as Duke of Lodi. The Mandelli family purchased the restaurant in 1894 and their descendants retain ownership today.
What you see
A sixteenth-century fireplace remains the most significant architectural feature visible to visitors, anchoring the building’s claim to historical continuity. The surrounding structure reflects centuries of incremental modification and adaptation while maintaining its essential function as a gathering place.
Cultural significance
Bagutto embodies the living heritage of Milan’s culinary history. Its documented longevity—spanning from the Late Medieval period through the Napoleonic era to the present day—makes it an exceptional record of urban continuity and the evolution of hospitality culture in northern Italy.
