Chiericati Palace

Andrea Palladio’s masterwork in civic elegance, transformed from a sixteenth-century noble residence into Vicenza’s principal art museum.

At a glance

Chiericati Palace stands on Piazza Matteotti as a defining example of Renaissance architecture. Designed by Andrea Palladio and built over more than a century, it now houses the civic art gallery with significant collections spanning prints, drawings, numismatics, medieval and modern sculpture.

History

Palladio designed the palace in 1550 for the Chiericati counts, a prominent Vicentine family. Construction began in 1551 but proceeded fitfully; the building remained incomplete for more than a century, finally reaching completion at the end of the seventeenth century.

The palace assumed its cultural mission in 1855, when it became the historic seat of the civic museum. Since then it has served as the repository of Vicenza’s artistic heritage.

What you see

The palace exemplifies Palladio’s principles of proportion and harmony. Its Renaissance design demonstrates the architect’s characteristic use of classical orders and symmetrical composition, creating a facade of refinement and restraint that anchors the piazza.

Interior spaces accommodate the extensive art collections with careful attention to context and display.

Cultural significance

Chiericati Palace represents Palladio’s vision of the urban palazzo—neither fortress nor ornamental fantasy, but a rational, proportioned response to domestic aristocratic life. Its recognition by UNESCO since 1994, alongside Vicenza’s other Palladian buildings, affirms the city’s status as a laboratory of Renaissance architectural innovation.
