Villa Emo Capodilista
A Renaissance hunting lodge on the Montecchia hill, Villa Emo Capodilista exemplifies sixteenth-century Venetian villa design with richly frescoed rooms and formal gardens.
At a glance
Designed by Dario Varotari the Elder in the second half of the 16th century, this villa combines geometric architecture with elaborate interior decoration. The square-plan structure contains eight principal rooms arranged across two storeys, their walls and ceilings adorned with mythological and historical frescoes.
History
Villa Emo Capodilista was commissioned as a hunting lodge and remained in the family’s possession throughout its history. The property reflects the sustained patronage of the Capodilista family, whose influence shaped its artistic development across centuries.
What you see
The villa’s symmetrical square plan organises four rooms on each floor, linked by a four-ramp staircase. Large windows with arranged curtains admit natural light; the north façade features a distinctive canopy striped in white and blue. Interior frescoes depict mythological scenes, family chronicles and Roman history alongside decorative putti and friezes. The vineyard room ceiling showcases a detailed pergola of leaves and grapes, while walls display a garden pavilion framed by painted vine plants and surrounding architectural ornaments. Varotari the Elder is credited with the bedroom ceiling—a composition showing Time driving away Vice. Italian gardens with semicircular exedras surround the building. An adjacent oratory dedicated to San Pancrazio, dating to the early nineteenth century, contains tombs of family members.
Cultural significance
The villa represents a pivotal moment in Renaissance villa design, when aristocratic retreats merged architectural refinement with landscape integration. Varotari’s frescoes establish Villa Emo Capodilista as a documented work by a significant figure in Venetian painting, while the preservation of interior decoration offers insight into sixteenth-century domestic taste and iconographic programmes.
