United States Post Office–Lovelock Main

A Depression-era post office in rural Nevada, built with federal ambition and decorated with a historic mural documenting the region’s mining past.

At a glance

Completed in 1938, this modest post office stands as a monument to New Deal confidence and federal investment in small-town America. The building’s Starved Classicism design—restrained, functional, dignified—reflects the architectural principles of the era’s standardized federal architecture.

History

The U.S. Post Office–Lovelock Main was constructed in 1938 at the height of the Depression. In 1940, artist Ejnar Hansen painted a monumental mural in the lobby titled The Uncovering of the Comstock Lode, commemorating Nevada’s silver-mining heritage. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

What you see

The post office exemplifies Starved Classicism—a stripped-down, economical interpretation of classical design favored by federal architects during the 1930s. The building’s proportions and materials convey solidity and permanence without ornament. Hansen’s mural dominates the interior lobby, its subject anchoring Lovelock’s identity to the broader narrative of Western settlement and industrial transformation.

Cultural significance

The post office symbolizes more than efficient mail delivery. It represents federal recognition of Lovelock’s regional importance and the connection between citizens and their elected representatives in Washington. Both the building and Hansen’s mural testify to the federal government’s Depression-era public works programs, which provided employment for artists and builders while addressing civic need.
