St Peter’s College
A Catholic boys’ secondary school in Auckland’s Grafton neighbourhood, established in 1939 and rooted in the Edmund Rice educational tradition.
At a glance
St Peter’s College is one of the largest Catholic secondary schools in New Zealand, with a current roll exceeding 1,300 students. Located in central Auckland on land donated by the Outhwaite family, it remains the oldest existing Catholic boys’ school in the city still operating on its original site.
History
Founded in 1939, St Peter’s College succeeded two earlier institutions: Mr Powell’s School (established 1841), Auckland’s earliest school, and St Peter’s School (founded 1857). The Christian Brothers staffed the college for its first 70 years, shaping its educational mission. In 1982, the school was integrated into New Zealand’s state system along with 240 other Catholic schools nationwide.
A notable feature of the college’s mid-twentieth-century operation was a dedicated railway station created specifically for the school, which provided direct access for nearly 50 years and was initially known as “St Peter’s College station.”
What you see
Information about the school’s architectural character is limited in available sources. The college occupies a substantial campus in Grafton capable of accommodating over 1,300 students.
Cultural significance
St Peter’s exemplifies the Edmund Rice tradition of Catholic education in the Southern Hemisphere. Its institutional continuity—spanning from New Zealand’s earliest schools through to the present day—reflects the development of Catholic secondary education in Auckland. The school’s integration into the state system in 1982 marked a watershed moment for religious education in New Zealand.
