Soldier Synagogue

Rostov-on-Don’s only active synagogue, rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a devastating pogrom, stands as a monument to Jewish resilience and cultural continuity in southern Russia.

At a glance

The Soldier Synagogue is an active Jewish congregation and house of worship on Turgenevskaia Street. Completed in 1872, it represents a remarkable survival of religious and architectural heritage in a city with a complex twentieth-century history.

History

The synagogue’s early decades proved turbulent. In 1905, during widespread anti-Jewish violence, the building was burnt down. Rather than abandoned, the structure was restored between 1913 and 1914 by architect Yakov Gevirts, who redesigned it in the modern Art Nouveau idiom.

Soviet rule brought closure. In 1935, the synagogue was shuttered for worship. Following World War II, the building was transferred back to Rostov’s Jewish community, enabling its return to active religious service.

What you see

The restored synagogue exemplifies early twentieth-century Art Nouveau design. Gevirts’s 1913–1914 renovation brought contemporary aesthetic principles to the building’s facade and interior, creating a visual record of the period’s architectural aspirations.

Cultural significance

As Rostov-on-Don’s sole active synagogue, the building carries outsized cultural weight. It testifies to Jewish presence and continuity in southern Russia across more than 150 years, and to the survival of religious institutions through pogroms and Soviet suppression. The synagogue is recognized on Russia’s register of regional cultural heritage.
