Roman Forum
The political, legal, religious and economic center of ancient Rome, this sprawling archaeological site contains temples, squares and government buildings spanning two millennia.
At a glance
The Roman Forum—known in Latin as Forum Romanum, Forum Magnum, or simply Forum—occupies a large excavation area bounded by the Palatine Hill, the Capitoline Hill, Via dei Fori Imperiali and the Colosseum. The site layers remains from multiple historical periods, each reflecting Rome’s evolving power and civic life.
History
For much of ancient Rome’s history, the Forum served as the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization. It functioned simultaneously as the city’s political headquarters, legal courthouse, religious sanctuary, and commercial marketplace. The accumulated remains visible today represent centuries of construction, renovation, and cultural activity across diverse eras of Roman rule.
What you see
Visitors encounter temples, public squares (comitia), and administrative buildings preserved in archaeological layers. Some structures date back approximately 2,000 years. The heterogeneous remains reflect the Forum’s evolution as Rome’s institutions and urban planning changed over time.
Cultural significance
The Roman Forum represents the physical embodiment of Roman civic life at its apex. Walking through its ruins offers direct contact with the spaces where emperors, senators, merchants, and citizens conducted the business of empire and daily life.
