Gran Caffè Gambrinus
A landmark Neapolitan café founded in 1860, celebrated for its Art Nouveau interiors and its role as a gathering place for artists and intellectuals.
At a glance
Gran Caffè Gambrinus stands on Via Chiaia as one of Italy’s most prestigious historic coffeehouses. Its name honours Joannus Primus, the legendary Flemish king and patron of beer. The establishment holds membership in the Association of Historical Places of Italy.
History
Vincenzo Apuzzo founded the café in 1860, and it quickly earned acclaim across all social classes for the skill of its pastry chefs, ice cream makers, and bartenders. Royal recognition followed: the king granted Apuzzo the title “Provider of the Royal House.”
Under Mario Vacca’s later management, the interior underwent comprehensive redecoration between 1889 and 1890. Architect Antonio Curri orchestrated the work, enlisting twelve leading Neapolitan impressionist painters—including Luca Postiglione, Pietro Scoppetta, Vincenzo Volpe, Edoardo Matania, Attilio Pratella, Giuseppe Alberto Cocco, Giuseppe Casciaro, Giuseppe Chiarolanza, Gaetano Esposito, Vincenzo Migliaro, Vincenzo Irolli, and Vincenzo Caprile—to fresco the rooms.
What you see
The café’s interior exemplifies Art Nouveau design, preserved from the late nineteenth century. Ornamental stuccos, sculptural works, and frescoed walls showcase the craftsmanship of Neapolitan impressionist masters. The ensemble reflects both the architectural fashion of its era and the artistic talent the city commanded.
Cultural significance
Gran Caffè Gambrinus functioned as an intellectual and artistic salon, drawing figures including Gabriele D’Annunzio and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Its sustained prominence in Neapolitan cultural life, combined with its exceptional artistic decoration, cements its status as a monument to both café culture and fin-de-siècle aesthetics in southern Italy.
