Church of San Giorgio in Velabro

A medieval church in Rome’s historic center, expanded in the 9th century and rebuilt multiple times, standing near two ancient Roman arches in the shadow of legend.

At a glance

San Giorgio in Velabro occupies a pivotal position in Rome’s ancient topography. The church rises near the Arco di Giano and the Arco degli Argentari, in the small square of the Cloaca Massima—steps from the legendary site where the she-wolf discovered Romulus and Remus. Today it serves as a rectory under the order of the Holy Cross and hosts the diaconate of San Giorgio in Velabro.

History

The church evolved from a 9th-century expansion of an earlier deacon building. Multiple reconstructions followed, leaving the structure a palimpsest of medieval and later interventions. Its diaconate has held distinguished prelates: cardinals who would become popes Bonifacio IX (1381–1385) and Martin V (1406–1417) both held the title. Blessed Peter of Luxembourg served as pseudocardinal of the antipope Clement VII from 1384 to 1387, and Saint John Henry Newman held the diaconate from 1879 to 1890.

Pope Gregory II (715–731) established San Giorgio as the stationary church for Thursday after Ash Wednesday—a designation that anchors it within the liturgical geography of Rome.

What you see

The building reflects centuries of adaptation and repair. Its medieval fabric, visible in the walls and proportions, bears witness to the 9th-century reconstruction that formed its essential character, though subsequent remodeling has altered details throughout. The church’s modest scale befits its urban setting within the dense Ripa district.

Cultural significance

San Giorgio in Velabro embodies Rome’s layered history—situated between pagan monuments and Christian worship, between the legendary founding of the city and its ecclesiastical governance. Its roster of cardinals and saints reflects the deep entanglement of the diaconate system with the highest echelons of the Church. The church remains a working parish entity and a tangible link to medieval Rome’s spiritual landscape.
