A Mission Revival railway station built at the birth of electric interurban transit in Texas, now serving as a museum and transit hub for modern light rail.

This 1908 Mission Revival station anchors Plano’s historic downtown and continues its role as a mobility center. Today it houses the Interurban Railway Museum and shares its right of way with Dallas Area Rapid Transit light rail, linking past and present infrastructure.
History
Plano Station opened in 1908 with the launch of the Texas Electric Railway, part of the interurban railway movement that transformed regional transportation. The railway operated for four decades until 1948, when it ceased service. The station then stood vacant for decades until 1990, when the City of Plano undertook a comprehensive renovation. The building was recognized with listing on the National Register of Historic Places on August 10, 2005.
What you see
The building displays Mission Revival and Spanish Revival characteristics typical of early 20th-century transportation terminals. The station grounds display Car 360, a fully restored railcar from the original Texas Electric Railway, offering visitors a tangible connection to the line’s operational era.
Cultural significance
Plano Station represents the architectural and social momentum of the interurban railway age, when electric streetcars connected Texas towns and enabled suburban development. Its preservation and reuse as a museum honors this transportation legacy while its modern light rail service demonstrates how historic infrastructure can adapt to contemporary needs.
