Our Lady of Good Voyage Church

A Spanish Revival church built to honor Gloucester’s Portuguese fishing community, this landmark rises above the Atlantic with one of America’s oldest carillon bell sets.

At a glance

Our Lady of Good Voyage Church stands at the corner of Prospect and Taylor Streets in Gloucester, a historic fishing port north of Boston. The present structure, completed after a devastating fire, draws architectural inspiration from the Azorean islands that supplied much of its congregation.

History

The first church on this site opened in 1892 to serve Gloucester’s burgeoning Portuguese immigrant population, who arrived to work in the region’s thriving fishery. That wooden structure burned in 1914, destroying the building but not the community’s faith. The Spanish Revival replacement was designed to echo the Santa Maria Madalena church in Madalena, on the Azorean island of Pico—a symbolic link to the ancestral homes of parishioners. The church was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

What you see

The church’s Spanish Revival exterior, with its distinctive forms and detailing, creates a striking presence in Gloucester’s townscape. Inside, the structure houses one of the oldest complete sets of carillon bells in the United States—a sonorous voice calling the faithful and marking time for the wider community.

Cultural significance

This building embodies the intersection of maritime labor, immigrant experience, and religious devotion. It represents the Portuguese diaspora’s profound influence on New England fishing communities, and the architectural homage to Pico demonstrates how immigrant communities preserved cultural memory through sacred architecture.
