National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa

Italy’s first railway opened here in 1839. The museum preserves locomotives, carriages, and railway heritage in nineteenth-century pavilions overlooking the Gulf of Naples.

At a glance

A collection of 55 historic railway vehicles spans 14,000 square meters. Steam locomotives, Littorine trains, and model railroads document Italian railway history from its inception.

History

On 3 October 1839, the first railway track in Italy was inaugurated in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The line measured 7,411 meters and connected Naples to Portici, establishing this site as the birthplace of Italian railways. Today, the modern Naples-Salerno railway runs alongside the museum grounds on the same historic route.

What you see

Nineteenth-century pavilions house the collection with views toward the Gulf of Naples. Visitors encounter steam locomotives, period carriages, and Littorine trains—streamlined luxury rail cars from the early twentieth century. A centerpiece is the large model railway “Trecentotreni,” measuring 18 meters long and 2 meters wide. Railway memorabilia and model trains complete the exhibition.

Cultural significance

The museum commemorates a pivotal moment in Italian industrial history. The 1839 Naples-Portici line represented the peninsula’s entry into the railway age, preceding most European nations and transforming transportation and commerce in the Two Sicilies.
