Liznjek Farm

An 18th-century farmhouse in the heart of Kranjska Gora preserves the domestic life of a prosperous Alpine peasant family, now presented as an ethnographic museum with period furnishings and local historical collections.

At a glance

The Liznjek Farm is an ethnographic museum occupying a renovated brick and timber farmhouse in central Kranjska Gora. Administered by the Upper Sava Museum, it documents the mid-19th-century living conditions of a wealthy peasant household through original furnishings and carefully curated interiors.

History

Built in the 18th century, the farmhouse stood as a family residence for generations before its conversion to museum use. The Upper Sava Museum, based in nearby Jesenice, now oversees its preservation and presentation. The basement level houses a dedicated exhibit on local writer Josip Vandot, author of the beloved Kekec series of children’s books.

What you see

The structure combines brick construction on the lower floors with a wooden upper story, reflecting traditional Alpine building methods. Inside, a furnished attic and full basement—including cellar and stable spaces—reveal the practical organisation of rural life. A substantial barn across the courtyard completes the working farm complex. Period furnishings and museum acquisitions fill the rooms, creating an intimate portrait of domestic routines and material culture.

Cultural significance

The farm documents the social and economic position of rural prosperity in the Upper Sava Valley. Its preservation allows visitors to understand the domestic comfort and architectural sophistication accessible to successful peasant farmers in the pre-industrial Alpine region.
