Villa Lavagnoli Greggio

An eighteenth-century noble residence in the Veneto countryside, transformed into a working farm and agriturismo that embodies centuries of local history.

At a glance

Villa Lavagnoli Greggio began as an aristocratic retreat in the 1700s and passed through successive noble families before becoming a working agricultural property and hospitality business. Located in Casalserugo, in the low Paduan plain, the villa preserves traces of its varied past—from its origins as a Trevisan family holding to its role during the Second World War.

History

The villa originated in the eighteenth century as a holiday residence for the nobility. During that era, it was owned by the Trevisan family, notably Ettore and his sons Giovanni Battista and Giacomo.

In the nineteenth century, ownership transferred to the Da Zara family, one of Casalserugo’s wealthiest landholding families. A celebrated member, Leonino da Zara, became a pioneering aircraft-hangar builder and baptized the nearby airfield “Ronchi del Volo” in honour of Italy’s first private airport. His legacy is documented in the Air Museum of San Pelagio, Due Carrare.

On 14 May 1952, Leonino ceded the villa to Guido Greggio, a passionate farmer and son of Giovanni Battista Trevisan, through a notarial deed. During the Second World War, the structure bore witness to German occupation. After decades of family inheritance and changing uses, Edvige and her daughter Liana opened the Agriturismo Villa Greggio in 2000, dedicating it to rural hospitality and regional promotion.

What you see

The villa presents the character of an eighteenth-century country house adapted over generations for agricultural and domestic use. Its rooms retain evidence of successive periods and purposes, reflecting the layered history of ownership and occupation across three centuries.

Cultural significance

Villa Lavagnoli Greggio documents the evolution of the Veneto countryside from the age of noble retreats through industrialisation and conflict to modern agritourism. It exemplifies how rural estates served multiple social and economic functions, and its survival connects the region’s aristocratic heritage with contemporary farm-based hospitality.
