Jefferson Elementary School
A modest Moderne schoolhouse built during the Depression to replace an overcrowded 1880s facility, now a testament to 1930s civic investment and design.
At a glance
Jefferson Elementary is a two-story brick school designed by the Des Moines firm Dougher, Rich & Woodburn in the streamlined Moderne style. Constructed in 1937 with Public Works Administration funds, it exemplifies Depression-era practical architecture tailored for pedagogical needs.
History
An earlier Jefferson School occupied this site from the 1880s, but grew overcrowded and outdated by the 1920s. The original building’s inadequacies prompted new construction. Hogeson Construction completed the replacement in 1937 for $74,629, financed through New Deal public-works money. The school operated for nearly seven decades before closing in 2006. Recognition came late: the building earned listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
What you see
The structure presents a refined exercise in Moderne restraint. Multi-colored light brown brick laid in common bond forms the walls, articulated by limestone beltcourses and copings that emphasize horizontal movement. A concrete foundation supports the two-story volume, topped with a flat roof typical of the era’s clean-lined aesthetic. The composition balances function with architectural dignity.
Cultural significance
Jefferson Elementary reflects the optimism of New Deal-era public investment in American education and infrastructure. The selection of Moderne design—progressive and efficient—signals how even modest Midwestern towns embraced contemporary architectural values during economic hardship. Its closure represents the broader transformation of rural and small-town America in the early twenty-first century.
