Gare d’Austerlitz
One of Paris’s seven major railway terminals, Gare d’Austerlitz anchors the southeastern left bank with a century of regional and international rail service.
At a glance
Paris Austerlitz is a working railway station serving approximately 30 million passengers annually from its 13th arrondissement location. The station marks the beginning of the Paris–Bordeaux line and connects to routes toward Toulouse and beyond.
History
The station emerged as a key node in France’s southwestern rail network, launching the Paris–Bordeaux connection that expanded passenger and freight reach into the industrial heartland. Long-distance southwestern services peaked before the 1990s expansion of faster rail infrastructure. In 2001, Elipsos night trains—jointly operated by Spanish railways Renfe and French SNCF—began overnight service from Austerlitz to Madrid and Barcelona, serving international travelers seeking scenic nocturnal routes. This romantic link ended in December 2013 with the inauguration of direct high-speed TGV service to Barcelona, marking a shift toward daytime express travel.
What you see
The station embodies Belle Époque railway architecture, reflecting the grand civic ambitions of late 19th-century Paris. Its design balances functional efficiency with aesthetic presence along the Seine’s left bank.
Cultural significance
The Ministry of Culture designated Gare d’Austerlitz a historical monument in 1997, recognizing its architectural merit and role in French transport history. It became the fifth of Paris’s seven major railway stations to receive such protection—a distinction reflecting both age and heritage value across the city’s rail infrastructure.
