Overview
Forlimpopoli is a town and comune in the province of Forlì-Cesena, north-eastern Italy, located on the Via Emilia between Cesena and Forlì. The settlement takes its name from the Roman military post Forum Popili, established in the second century BC along the consular road that linked Rimini to Piacenza. Today Forlimpopoli is best known as the hometown of Pellegrino Artusi, whose 1891 cookbook La scienza in cucina e l'arte di mangiar bene established the canon of bourgeois Italian cooking and remains in print to this day.
History
Founded by the Romans as a forum town on the Via Emilia, Forlimpopoli passed through Byzantine, Lombard, and Papal control during the medieval period. A Malatesta fortress — the Rocca — was built in the fourteenth century and still dominates the town centre. The town gained European cultural recognition after Pellegrino Artusi published his landmark culinary treatise in 1891; the book sold over one million copies during his lifetime and codified a common Italian gastronomic identity for the first time. Today the restored rocca houses the Casa Artusi cultural centre, dedicated to Artusi's legacy and Emilian food culture.
What you see
The historic centre of Forlimpopoli is compact and walkable, centred on the fourteenth-century Rocca di Forlimpopoli, a well-preserved square fortress with corner towers. The Piazza Fratti, the main square, retains its traditional Emilian character with porticoed buildings and the Collegiate Church of Sant'Uff'o. Casa Artusi, opened in 2007 inside the rocca, offers a permanent exhibition on Pellegrino Artusi's life, his cookbook, and Romagnolo culinary tradition, alongside a public kitchen school and restaurant.
Cultural significance
Forlimpopoli holds a unique place in Italian cultural history as the birthplace of the man who first articulated a unified Italian cuisine. Artusi's cookbook, written in plain Tuscan Italian accessible to middle-class households across the peninsula, played a significant role in forging a shared national identity through food. The town's annual Artusiana festival, held each June, draws food scholars, chefs, and enthusiasts from across Italy and abroad.
