Etruscan Necropolis of San Giovenale
Cut into volcanic tufa cliffs above the Rio Canale Valley, this Etruscan cemetery preserves monumental tombs and painted chambers that reveal the architectural sophistication of the ancient city of the dead.
At a glance
The Etruscan Necropolis of San Giovenale occupies a dramatic clifftside setting near Blera, a small Lazio village of three thousand inhabitants. The site showcases the characteristic “cube” tombs of Etruscan funerary architecture, arranged across the natural slope of the tufaceous terrain. Several painted chambers survive in good condition, their decorations comparable to contemporary tombs at Tarquinia dating to the fourth century BC.
History
This necropolis belonged to the Etruscan city, serving as the burial ground for its inhabitants over centuries. The arrangement of tombs—organized in overlapping parallel rows connected by steps—reflects a structured urban planning concept applied to the city of the dead. Within the tombs, Etruscan inscriptions record the names of the deceased, connecting modern visitors across millennia to individual lives and identities.
What you see
The site’s defining feature is the monumental cubic tombs carved directly into the cliff face. These structures feature lateral steps leading to entrances, with decorated cornices and moldings adorning their upper edges. The Grotte Penta complex contains one of the best-preserved examples. Two tombs nearby retain plastered and painted interior rooms, their wall decorations echoing the style of Tarquinian tombs from the fourth century BC. A rare circular mound, cut into the cliff near the Martarello fountain, represents an alternative funerary form. The topography itself—the descent through Rio Canale Valley between zones of habitation and burial—guides visitors through the Etruscan conception of sacred space.
Cultural significance
The necropolis demonstrates the architectural and artistic achievements of Etruscan civilization. The painted chambers and inscriptions provide evidence of funerary practices, religious beliefs, and individual identities from this pre-Roman culture. The site remains one of few Etruscan archaeological areas open to the public and easily accessible, offering insight into the relationship between the living and dead in ancient Etruscan society.
