A landmark Brutalist structure in Catford that transformed postwar London with its uncompromising geometry and unexpected gentleness.
At a glance
Eros House stands as a defining example of 1960s Brutalism in south London. Designed by architects Rodney Gordon and Owen Luder, the building rises boldly from Catford’s streetscape, its raw concrete forms a stark contrast to surrounding shopfronts and domestic architecture. Originally conceived as offices, it was converted to residential flats early in its life.
History
Constructed between 1960 and 1963, Eros House replaced the old Eros Theater on the same site. Gordon and Luder were simultaneously designing a new shopping centre for the area as part of an ambitious urban renewal scheme. Around 2000, much of the exterior was clad with insulation panels in a modernisation effort that substantially altered the building’s appearance. The changes were so extensive that Luder subsequently disowned the building before his death.
What you see
The structure exemplifies Gordon and Luder’s Brutalist vocabulary: massive concrete volumes, bold cantilevers, and a freestanding stair tower that serves as sculptural punctuation to the composition. The original exposed concrete surfaces have been partially obscured by later thermal cladding, yet the building’s fundamental geometry and spatial drama remain legible. Critic Ian Nairn observed that it “transforms the surroundings instead of despising them. This most craggy and uncompromising of London buildings turns out to be full of firm gentleness.”
Cultural significance
Eros House represents a pivotal moment in postwar British architecture when Brutalism held genuine cultural ambition for urban renewal. Despite later modifications, it remains a testament to Gordon and Luder’s conviction that bold geometric forms could coexist with human warmth—a principle often overlooked in dismissals of the style.
