Ely Cathedral
A monumental Romanesque cathedral crowned by a distinctive octagonal lantern tower, Ely has served as the spiritual heart of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk for nearly a thousand years.
At a glance
Ely Cathedral rises dramatically from the Cambridgeshire fenland, its central tower visible for miles across the flat landscape. The building combines massive Romanesque masonry with elaborate Decorated Gothic additions, creating a striking architectural ensemble that draws approximately 250,000 visitors annually.
History
The site traces its sacred origins to 672, when St Æthelthryth founded an abbey at Ely. The present cathedral’s earliest components date to 1083, marking the beginning of its Romanesque phase. In 1109, Ely was granted cathedral status. Following the Reformation, the dedication shifted from St Etheldreda and St Peter to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. Today it serves as the seat of the Bishop of Ely and hosts a suffragan bishop, the Bishop of Huntingdon.
What you see
The cathedral’s architectural character reflects multiple building campaigns. Romanesque solidity anchors the main structure, while the galilee porch, lady chapel, and choir showcase exuberant Decorated Gothic craftsmanship. The octagonal tower with its lantern above forms the cathedral’s most distinctive feature, creating an exceptional interior space and forming a landmark visible across the surrounding landscape. The West Tower completes the dramatic skyline.
Cultural significance
Ely Cathedral stands as an outstanding achievement of English ecclesiastical architecture, celebrated for both its monumental scale and refined stylistic details. Its pioneering octagonal lantern represents a unique engineering and artistic solution. The cathedral sustains daily worship through morning and evening services, maintaining its role as an active spiritual centre.
