Clos Lucé
The Renaissance château where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years, now a museum devoted to the master’s life and legacy.
At a glance
Clos Lucé, a substantial château in central Amboise, stands 500 metres from the royal Château d’Amboise and is connected to it by an underground passageway. Built in 1471 and designated a historic monument, it is today a museum tracing Leonardo da Vinci’s artistic and scientific achievements.
History
Hugues d’Amboise constructed the château in 1471 as the Manoir du Cloux. King Charles VIII acquired it from Étienne Le Loup in 1490, transforming it into a royal summer residence. In 1516, Francis I offered the ageing Leonardo da Vinci hospitality here after inviting him to France. Leonardo died at Clos Lucé on 2 May 1519. The mansion subsequently housed French nobility and became protected heritage. From 1855 onward, The Saint-Bris family, the current proprietors, established and directed it as a museum dedicated to Leonardo’s life and work.
What you see
The château exemplifies Renaissance domestic architecture of the Loire Valley. Its proximity to Amboise’s principal royal fortress, reinforced by the subterranean passage linking them, underscores its significance in court life and royal planning.
Cultural significance
Clos Lucé embodies the cultural exchange between Renaissance Italy and France. Leonardo’s final residence became a symbol of royal patronage and artistic genius. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres immortalized the moment of Leonardo’s death here in an 1818 oil painting, depicting Francis I supporting the dying master—a composition that has inspired countless retellings of this pivotal moment.
