Cinecittà
Rome’s legendary film studio complex, built as Europe’s largest cinema city following the destruction of the historic Cines studios.
At a glance
Cinecittà represents a landmark achievement in European cinema infrastructure. The studio complex was conceived as a replacement for Rome’s pioneering Cines facility and became a cornerstone of Italian film production.
History
In 1937, a mysterious fire destroyed the old Cines studios in Rome. From this loss emerged an ambitious vision: to create the largest cinema city in Europe. The project was entrusted to engineer Carlo Roncoroni and architect Gino Peressutti, who designed a purpose-built facility that would establish Rome as a major filmmaking center.
What you see
Cinecittà was designed as a comprehensive film production complex, engineered by Roncoroni and Peressutti to accommodate the full scope of cinema operations. The facility integrated sound stages, production offices, and technical infrastructure—elements essential to modern filmmaking in the mid-20th century.
Cultural significance
Cinecittà stands as a monument to Italian cinema’s golden age. The studios facilitated production of numerous acclaimed films and became synonymous with postwar Italian cinema. The complex embodies the era’s confidence in film as a major cultural and industrial enterprise.
