Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament
De La Salle University’s principal chapel stands as a modernist sanctuary marked by both architectural elegance and tragic wartime history.
At a glance
An Art Deco chapel on the second floor of St. La Salle Hall, the university’s oldest structure. The building features narra wood pews carved with the Signum Fidei Star, symbol of the De La Salle Brothers. Its striking design reflects 1930s modernism within a sacred context.
History
Constructed in the 1930s, the chapel was designed by architect Tomás Mapúa and became the spiritual center of De La Salle University. On February 12, 1945, during the Liberation of Manila, retreating Japanese troops massacred at least 60 civilians sheltering within its walls, seeking protection from artillery fire. The chapel survived the battle. The institution marked the 75th anniversary of its dedication on December 2, 2014, with a commemorative Mass.
What you see
The chapel exemplifies Art Deco style, designed by Tomás Mapúa with careful attention to proportion and material. Narra wood pews—a Philippine hardwood—dominate the interior, each bearing the carved Signum Fidei Star. The chapel occupies a prominent position within St. La Salle Hall, taking advantage of the building’s substantial construction.
Cultural significance
The chapel represents a crucial juncture between aesthetic modernism and spiritual witness. Its Art Deco vocabulary was unusual for Philippine religious architecture of the era. The 1945 tragedy endowed the space with profound historical weight—a place where civilians sought sanctuary only to become victims of warfare. Today it stands as both a functioning chapel and an unquiet memorial to wartime loss.
