Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

The ruins of a Byzantine and Carolingian cathedral in the Roman city of Luna, built atop a late-Republican domus and home to a venerated relic of Christ’s blood.

At a glance

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta occupied the ecclesiastical heart of Luna, a Roman port city. Though the building has been lost since around the 13th century, archaeological excavations in the area known as Cittadella continue to reveal its layered history—from Early Christian basilica through Byzantine and Carolingian phases to Romanesque transformation. The site comprises remains of the bishops’ palace, canonical buildings, baptistery, and cathedral itself.

History

The cathedral was erected in the second half of the 5th century, incorporating materials from pagan-era structures, as the first seat of the bishop of Luni. Early bishops including Felice (who participated in the Roman Council in 465) and Vittore (active 501–504) confirmed the diocese’s importance.

Around the middle of the 6th century, following the Greek-Gothic war, the church was substantially modified during Byzantine rule, when Luni became the center of the Maritime Province Italorum. The building was first documented in 879 under King Carlomanno of Italy. Despite the Lombard destruction of the city walls under King Rotari in 643, the basilica survived—the bishops of Luni retained political and administrative autonomy, as evidenced by Bishop Tomas at the Lateran Council (649) and Bishop Severus at Constantinople (680). It was likely dedicated to St. Mary during the Longobard period. The final phase saw Romanesque modifications before the cathedral was abandoned with the city in the early 13th century.

What you see

The surviving remains expose multiple construction phases. The Early Christian basilica utilized recycled Roman materials. Byzantine modifications reorganized the interior space. The chapel of the most precious blood, positioned to the right of the main altar and dedicated to St. Thomas, preserves the cathedral’s most celebrated treasure. Romanesque additions represent the last substantial interventions on the original structure, evidence of which persists today.

Cultural significance

The cathedral embodies the continuity of Christian worship in Luna from the late 5th century onward, its architectural layers documenting the city’s passage through Byzantine, Longobard, and medieval periods. The relic of the blood of Christ—brought to Luni in 742 and later transferred to this chapel—drew pilgrims and underscored the cathedral’s status as a significant religious center.
