Bologna — Liberty, Rationalism and a City of Porticoes
Bologna’s forty kilometres of UNESCO-listed medieval porticoes provided an unlikely backdrop for a Liberty revival and a Rationalist reinvention: Giuseppe Vaccaro’s brick-clad university buildings of the 1930s brought the Italian modern movement into the oldest university city in the world without disturbing the red tile and red brick continuum of the city’s roofline.
At a glance
Bologna is not the first city that comes to mind for Art Nouveau or Rationalism — its identity is defined by the medieval porticoes, the two towers and the university that has operated continuously since 1088. But its early-twentieth-century architecture rewards attention. A handful of Liberty apartment buildings in the centre display the characteristic Bolognese variant of Art Nouveau: restrained in comparison to Turin or Palermo, but notable for the quality of its ceramic tilework and wrought-iron balconies. Giuseppe Vaccaro’s Engineering Faculty (1935) is the defining work of Bolognese Rationalism: long horizontal bands of red brick in a Mediterranean modernist idiom that recalls the brick tradition of Emilian Romanesque without quoting it directly. The Stadio Renato Dall’Ara (1927, Umberto Costanzini) and the Arte Fiera (established 1974, now in BolognaFiere) anchor the city’s relationship to sport and the art market respectively.

History
Giuseppe Vaccaro was born in Bologna in 1896 and trained at the local School of Fine Arts before becoming one of the most prolific Rationalist architects of the Fascist period. His Engineering Faculty (Viale Risorgimento 2, 1935) is exceptional for its restraint: where Roman Rationalism tended toward the monumental, Vaccaro maintained human scale — the building’s three wings are connected by covered walkways, its brick cladding refers to the regional Romanesque tradition and its window rhythms are disciplined without being rigid. The building has been in continuous university use since construction and remains largely unaltered.
The Palazzina Majani (Via Indipendenza 36, 1908) is one of the most accessible Liberty buildings in the centre: the historic chocolate shop’s facade displays polychrome ceramic panels, Liberty ironwork and carved stonework that represent the Bolognese variant of the style — less theatrical than Coppedè’s Rome, more botanically precise than Sommaruga’s Milan. The shop, founded in 1796 and still operating, is the oldest chocolatier in Bologna. The Stadio Renato Dall’Ara (Via A. Costa 174, 1927) was built for the 1934 World Cup and redesigned after the war; its ring of arched loggias in the Rationalist manner makes it one of the architecturally most distinguished stadiums still in use in Italy.
What you see
Vaccaro’s Engineering Faculty is on the edge of the university district, 1.5 km from the centre — reachable on foot or by bus 11 from Piazza Maggiore. The building is open during university hours; the courtyard and corridors are accessible to visitors. The Palazzina Majani on Via Indipendenza is immediately accessible as a functioning shop: enter, buy a scorza (the house chocolate bar since 1832), and observe the Liberty ceiling and wall panels at leisure.
The portico circuit is the UNESCO experience: the Portico di San Luca (3.5 km of covered arcades ascending to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca) is the world’s longest portico and can be walked or cycled. The Two Towers (Asinelli and Garisenda) in Piazza di Porta Ravegnana are the surviving pair of hundreds that Bologna’s medieval merchant families erected as status symbols; the Asinelli is climbable (fee applies). BolognaFiere (Via della Fiera 20, Kenzo Tange, 1973) is accessible during trade fairs including Arte Fiera (February) and SANA (September).
