Edilberto Rosa Civic Archaeological Museum and Picture Gallery
A three-level museum tracing Amelia’s history from pre-Roman settlement through the early medieval period, housed in a Renaissance college with a striking 16th-century cloister.
At a glance
Inaugurated in April 2001, the museum occupies the former Boccarini college and presents archaeological finds and artworks spanning nearly two millennia. The building’s entrance cloister, with its double loggia, exemplifies Renaissance architecture and sets the tone for a visit rich in historical context.
History
The museum documents Amelia’s transformation from pre-Roman origins through its definitive Christianization. Roman inscriptions and stelae span from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD, chronicling the city’s status during the imperial period. The collection culminates with early medieval archaeological material, reflecting the region’s transition to Christian Europe.
What you see
The Renaissance cloister, designed by Fra Egidio Delfini in the 16th century, features a distinctive double loggia that welcomes visitors. Inside, three floors are organized chronologically. The ground floor displays the earliest artifacts; the first floor houses Roman-period materials, including a bronze portrait statue of Germanicus alongside inscriptions and stelae. The second floor holds early medieval finds and an art gallery with paintings from the 15th to 18th centuries.
Cultural significance
The museum is essential for understanding central Umbrian history. The Germanicus portrait represents rare figurative bronze work from antiquity. Together, the collections illustrate how a provincial Roman center evolved through late antiquity and into the medieval world, making Amelia’s archaeological record invaluable to scholars of Umbrian cultural development.
