Alfréd Hajós National Swimming Stadium

A modernist aquatics complex on Margaret Island, Hungary’s premier venue for competitive swimming, diving, and water polo since 1930.

At a glance

This eight-pool complex spans 80,000 square meters across four floors, combining indoor and outdoor facilities for training, diving, and international competition. The venue regularly hosts world-class events and remains Budapest’s leading water sports centre.

History

The indoor swimming pool opened in 1930, designed by Alfréd Hajós, a renowned Hungarian swimmer and architect whose name the facility bears. Eszter Pécsi, Hungary’s first female architect and structural engineer, designed the distinctive articulated reinforced concrete arches.

An outdoor pool and diving facility were completed in 1937. Major expansion occurred before the 2006 European Championship, when an additional 50-meter outdoor pool and diving pool—named after Tamás Széchy—were added, bringing the complex to its current eight-pool configuration.

What you see

Hajós’s design showcases early modernist aquatic architecture, with Pécsi’s reinforced concrete arches as defining structural elements. The facility blends indoor and outdoor spaces across four levels, featuring an international standard diving platform and pools of varying depths and lengths for different competitive disciplines.

Cultural significance

The stadium represents a pivotal moment in Hungarian modernist design, uniting pioneering architect Hajós with Pécsi, a trailblazer in structural engineering. It has served as Budapest’s principal venue for Olympic-caliber aquatic competition for nearly a century.
