Al Wusta Wildlife Reserve
A desert and coastal nature reserve that made history by becoming the first UNESCO World Heritage Site ever to be removed from the register, following severe habitat reduction and wildlife decline.
At a glance
Al Wusta Wildlife Reserve spans Oman’s central desert and coastal hills, protecting one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most fragile ecosystems. The reserve gained international prominence not for its preservation success, but for an unprecedented delisting from UNESCO’s World Heritage register in 2007.
History
Originally inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list in a much larger form, Al Wusta—formerly known as Arabian Oryx Sanctuary—was intended to safeguard the Arabian oryx and its habitat. The reserve’s fate changed dramatically following the discovery of oil at the site. In 2007, Oman reduced the reserve by 90%, prompting UNESCO to take the extraordinary step of removing it from the World Heritage register—the first such delisting in the organisation’s history.
What you see
The reserve comprises two distinct landscapes: the central desert interior and coastal hill ranges. This topographic variety once supported diverse wildlife across distinct ecological zones.
Cultural significance
Al Wusta’s heritage status reflects both Oman’s early conservation efforts and the complex tensions between resource extraction and environmental protection in the Middle East. The 2007 delisting remains a watershed moment in UNESCO history, illustrating the consequences when economic interests override heritage commitments. The Arabian oryx itself—which the sanctuary was designed to protect—holds symbolic importance as an icon of Arabian wildlife conservation.
