MUVE – Venice Civic Museums Foundation

An institutional umbrella managing Venice’s most important civic collections, from the Ducal Palace to contemporary galleries across the lagoon.

At a glance

MUVE (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia) was established by Municipal Council resolution on 3 March 2008 to oversee the management and coordination of Venice’s major civic museum heritage. The foundation operates twelve distinct institutions spanning medieval palaces, art galleries, and specialized collections.

History

Created through municipal governance, MUVE formalized the administration of Venice’s dispersed civic collections under a single organizational structure. This consolidated approach enables coordinated conservation and public access to the city’s most significant cultural assets.

What you see

MUVE operates across multiple historic buildings throughout Venice and the lagoon islands. The Ducal Palace remains the flagship site, while Ca’ Rezzonico showcases eighteenth-century Venetian life; Ca’ Pesaro houses modern and contemporary art. Specialized museums dedicated to glass (Murano), lace (Burano), textiles (Palazzo Mocenigo), and the life of playwright Carlo Goldoni complete the network. The Clock Tower and Natural History Museum round out the civic collection.

Cultural significance

MUVE represents Venice’s commitment to preserving its artistic, historical, and craft heritage. The foundation’s portfolio documents the city’s power as a medieval republic, its prosperity during the eighteenth century, and its role in the Italian Risorgimento. The inclusion of specialized craft museums reflects the lagoon’s continuing tradition in glassmaking and lacemaking.
