Vaucluse House

A Gothic Revival mansion and country estate on Sydney Harbour, built by statesman William Charles Wentworth and now preserved as a museum and public park.

At a glance

Vaucluse House stands on 11 hectares of formal gardens and grounds on the south-eastern shores of Port Jackson. The 19th-century estate comprises a main residence, kitchen wing, stables and outbuildings. It remains one of the few houses from this era near Sydney Harbour that retains significant original grounds.

History

The house was built between 1803 and 1839 as the home of William Charles Wentworth, a colonial statesman and landowner. The design is attributed to Wentworth himself, with construction carried out by Wentworth and Sir Henry Browne Hayes. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999 and is now owned by Museums of History NSW, an agency of the state government.

What you see

The residence exemplifies the Gothic Revival style favoured in early colonial architecture. The main house is accompanied by period outbuildings including a separate kitchen wing and stables, arranged across the estate. The landscape design preserves formal gardens that complement the architectural composition, offering views toward Port Jackson.

Cultural significance

Vaucluse House documents the life and tastes of a prominent colonial figure and the domestic practices of the colonial gentry. Its survival with much of its original setting intact makes it exceptional among 19th-century Sydney residences—most have lost their surrounding grounds to urban development.
