Overview

ISIDAS is located within the historic Santo Spirito in Sassia complex, one of the oldest continuously operating hospital sites in the world, founded by Pope Innocent III in 1198. The museum preserves and interprets the evolution of healthcare and medical knowledge in Italy through an extensive collection of artefacts, documents, and artworks. It serves as both a research centre and a public cultural institution documenting the intersection of science, art, and medicine.

History

The Santo Spirito hospital, within which ISIDAS is embedded, has operated on the Lungotevere since the late 12th century and was for centuries the principal charitable hospital of Rome under papal patronage. Systematic collection of historical medical instruments and documentation began in the 19th century, reflecting the broader European movement to historicise medicine as a discipline. The museum was formally constituted as a national institution in the 20th century and expanded its holdings to include pharmaceutical, anatomical, and artistic material related to the history of healing arts.

What you see

The collection encompasses surgical instruments from Roman antiquity through to the 20th century, including rare Renaissance and Baroque examples. Anatomical wax models, apothecary jars, obstetric mannequins, and early radiological equipment illustrate the progression of medical knowledge. The setting within the frescoed halls of the Santo Spirito complex adds a significant architectural and artistic dimension; the 15th-century Sistine Hall — commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV — features a celebrated fresco cycle depicting the hospital’s foundation.

Cultural significance

ISIDAS occupies a unique position in Italian cultural heritage as the primary national institution for the history of sanitary and medical arts. Its location within a living hospital complex that has served Rome for over eight centuries makes it a rare example of heritage in continuous institutional context. The museum contributes substantially to the historiography of Italian medicine and to international scholarship on the history of science.
