BISHOP AUCKLAND, ENGLAND · FROM 1183
Auckland Castle

A former bishop’s palace transformed into a cultural landmark, Auckland Castle combines medieval grandeur with Baroque refinement and houses one of England’s most significant Spanish art collections.

At a glance

Auckland Castle served as the principal residence of the bishops of Durham for nearly two centuries, until 2012. Today it operates as a tourist destination while retaining the bishop’s offices, bridging its ecclesiastical past with contemporary cultural purpose.

History

The castle has been connected to Durham’s bishopric since approximately 1183. Its role evolved significantly in the nineteenth century: from 1832 onward it became the bishops’ primary residence, replacing their earlier seats. This status persisted until 2012, when the Auckland Castle Trust—now operating as the Auckland Project—acquired the property and its contents, opening it to the public as a museum and cultural venue.

What you see

The chapel stands as the castle’s architectural jewel, recognized in the Buildings of England series as “one of the finest rooms in North East England.” Originally the medieval great hall, it underwent radical transformation under Bishop John Cosin between 1661 and 1665. The woodwork—pulpit, stalls, and screen—commissioned by Cosin synthesizes Gothic and Baroque vocabularies into a coherent whole. The interiors reflect centuries of episcopal taste and investment.

Cultural significance

Auckland Castle houses twelve paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán depicting Jacob and His Twelve Sons, forming one of England’s most important Spanish Old Master collections outside London. A thirteenth portrait of Benjamin is a later copy; the original resides at Grimstörpe Castle in Lincolnshire. This assemblage makes the castle a destination for scholars and admirers of Baroque Spanish painting. The Grade I listed status reflects its architectural and historical importance to the English heritage landscape.
