Castle of Pozzolo Formigaro
The Castle of Pozzolo Formigaro is a medieval fortification in the comune of Pozzolo Formigaro in the Province of Alessandria, southern Piedmont. Situated in the Po plain about 20 km southeast of Alessandria, the castle commanded a strategic crossing point along routes linking the Ligurian passes to the Po valley. Like many castles of the Monferrato and Alessandria area, it passed through successive feudal lords across the medieval and early modern periods, serving both as a defensive stronghold and as the seat of local seigneurial authority.

Overview
Pozzolo Formigaro is a small comune in the Province of Alessandria with a population of approximately 4,500 inhabitants, located on the flat Piedmontese plain southeast of Alessandria. The castle is the most significant historical monument in the territory and one of the characteristic fortified structures that once dotted the medieval landscape of the Alessandria area, built to control movement across the Scrivia river valley and the roads connecting Genoa to the Po basin.
History
The fortification at Pozzolo Formigaro likely dates to the early medieval period, when the commune of Alessandria and the Marquisate of Montferrat competed for control over the surrounding territory. The castle would have changed hands multiple times as the area was contested between Milanese, Genoese, and Piedmontese powers during the 14th and 15th centuries. Like many similar structures in the Po plain, it underwent modifications over time before gradually losing its military function in the early modern era.
What you see
The castle presents the characteristic features of a Piedmontese plain fortification: thick perimeter walls, tower elements, and a courtyard layout adapted to the flat terrain. The surrounding agricultural landscape of the Po plain provides a contrast to the upland castle traditions of the Monferrato hills nearby. The structure’s material fabric retains evidence of construction phases from different centuries, visible in variations of masonry technique and window forms.
Cultural significance
The castle represents the layered feudal history of the Alessandria hinterland, a zone where the competing ambitions of medieval Italian city-states and feudal dynasties left a dense legacy of fortifications. Preserving such structures is important to understanding the political geography of medieval Piedmont and the strategic logic of its landscape.
