PAFF! — Friuli Comic Arts Palace — International Museum of Comic Art
PAFF! (Palazzo Arti Fumetto Friuli) is the International Museum of Comic Art in Pordenone, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, inaugurated in 2020 in the historic Palazzo Badini in the city centre. One of Italy’s most significant institutions dedicated to sequential art, PAFF! houses a permanent collection of original comic pages, preparatory drawings, and archival materials spanning Italian and international comic art from the late 19th century to the present. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions of major comic artists, educational programmes, and events connected to Pordenone’s long tradition as a centre of comic art culture.

Overview
PAFF! occupies Palazzo Badini, a 19th-century building in the heart of Pordenone, a provincial city in the plain between the Dolomites and the Adriatic that has cultivated an exceptional relationship with comic art for decades. Pordenone has hosted the influential Pordenone Silent Film Festival since 1982 and the Fumetto in festival since 2000, establishing the city as a hub for popular visual culture. The museum is the culmination of this long civic investment in sequential art as a serious artistic and cultural form, providing a permanent institutional home for a collection of international significance.
History
Italy has one of the world’s richest comic art traditions, from the pioneering work of Attilio Mussino and Antonio Rubino in the early 20th century to the global success of authors such as Hugo Pratt, Guido Crepax, and the creators of Diabolik. Pordenone’s civic authorities and cultural organisations began advocating for a dedicated comic art museum in the 1990s, recognising the artistic and documentary value of original comic pages that were being dispersed on the international collectors’ market. PAFF! opened in February 2020, weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily closed Italian museums, and re-emerged as a major national cultural institution in 2021.
What you see
The museum’s permanent collection includes original ink-on-paper pages by major Italian and international comic artists, displayed in sequence to allow visitors to experience the rhythm and craft of sequential narrative. Temporary exhibitions in the upper floors of Palazzo Badini have featured retrospectives on figures including Milton Caniff, Moebius, and leading contemporary Italian illustrators. The palazzo’s neoclassical interior — with its frescoed ceilings and monumental staircase — creates an intriguing dialogue between the historic architectural envelope and the energy of comic art.
Cultural significance
PAFF! is a landmark in the ongoing legitimation of comic art as a major cultural form deserving institutional support equivalent to painting, cinema, or literature. Its location in Pordenone, rather than in a major metropolitan centre, reflects the important role that Italian provincial cities have played in sustaining popular culture industries and in building dedicated audiences for sequential art from the mid-20th century onward.
