Overview

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is administered by the National Park Service and is one of the most visited sites in the United States. The four presidents were chosen to represent the founding, expansion, preservation, and development of the nation: Washington for the founding, Jefferson for continental expansion through the Louisiana Purchase, Lincoln for preserving the Union during the Civil War, and Theodore Roosevelt for early 20th-century development and conservation. The sculpture has become an enduring symbol of American democracy, though it is also the subject of ongoing controversy regarding its location on land sacred to the Lakota Sioux people.

History

The project originated with South Dakota state historian Doane Robinson, who in 1923 proposed carving local heroes into the Needles rock formation to attract tourism. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum redirected the concept to national figures and selected Mount Rushmore, a granite peak in the Black Hills, as the site. Work began on 4 October 1927, funded primarily by the federal government, and employed approximately 400 workers using dynamite, jackhammers, and hand tools. Borglum died in March 1941 and his son Lincoln oversaw the final months before the project ended that October, leaving the originally planned full-figure sculptures unfinished.

What you see

From the main viewing terrace, the four presidential faces emerge from the pale grey granite of the mountainside, their eyes hollowed slightly to create a dramatic shadow that conveys depth and life. Each face is approximately 18 metres tall, with noses 6 metres long and eyes 3.4 metres wide. The Avenue of Flags, lined with the flags of all U.S. states and territories, forms a ceremonial promenade leading toward the carved faces. The Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center provides context on the carving techniques and the lives of the four presidents.

Cultural significance

Mount Rushmore occupies a unique place in American iconography: it has been reproduced on countless films, artworks, and commercial products as shorthand for American national identity. However, the memorial is located on Paha Sapa, land considered sacred by the Lakota Sioux and ceded to the United States under treaties later violated, making it a contested symbol. The Crazy Horse Memorial, a privately funded alternative monument to the Lakota leader, has been under construction nearby since 1948 as a counter-narrative to Rushmore’s presidential pantheon.
