Erminio Ferretto Square
Piazza Erminio Ferretto is the main public square of Mestre, the mainland borough of the City of Venice, named after Erminio Ferretto, a local 19th-century historian and archivist. The square serves as the civic and commercial heart of Mestre, surrounded by porticoed buildings, banks, and shops, and functions as the principal gathering space for the mainland Venetian community. Its pedestrianised layout and surrounding historic porticoes make it one of the most recognisable urban spaces in the Venetian hinterland.

Overview
Piazza Ferretto is the undisputed centre of Mestre, a borough of approximately 80,000 people on the Venetian mainland. Unlike the canal-threaded historic centre of Venice a few kilometres to the east, Mestre grew as a modern industrial and commercial city, and Piazza Ferretto represents its civic identity. The square is fully pedestrianised and lined with porticoes that shelter shoppers and strollers throughout the year.
History
Mestre has been the administrative and commercial hub of the Venetian mainland since the Middle Ages, when it served as a staging point for trade routes from the lagoon city. The square takes its name from Erminio Ferretto (1835–1902), a Venetian archivist and local historian who documented medieval Mestre and the surrounding territory. Over the 20th century, the piazza was modernised and pedestrianised to accommodate the growing population that migrated to the mainland. It remains the primary site for markets, civic events, and seasonal celebrations.
What you see
The square is enclosed by a continuous sequence of low porticoed buildings housing bars, shops, banks, and offices. A central open space allows large gatherings, and the square regularly hosts open-air markets and public events. A few heritage buildings along the edges preserve 19th-century facades. The Torre dell’Orologio, a clock tower, is among the most photographed local landmarks visible from the piazza.
Cultural significance
Piazza Ferretto embodies the mainland Venetian identity distinct from the lagoon city, offering a contemporary urban life that contrasts with the tourist-dense historic centre. For residents of the greater Venice municipality, it is a place of everyday civic life — markets, political rallies, seasonal fairs — rarely visited by the millions of day-trippers who concentrate on the islands.
