Overview
Montemilone is a small commune perched in the uplands of the Basilicata-Puglia border area, with a community that has historically experienced significant emigration to northern Italy, Europe, and the Americas. “Montemilonesi nel Mondo” was established to maintain cultural ties between those who left and the village that remained, organising events, publications, and visits that keep local traditions alive. The association operates in a region celebrated for its unspoiled landscapes, Bourbon-era village architecture, and deep-rooted agricultural traditions.
History
Like many southern Italian towns, Montemilone experienced waves of emigration from the late 19th century onward, with significant outflows in the post-World War II period as residents sought work in northern Italy and abroad. Cultural associations uniting emigrants with their places of origin became common across the Mezzogiorno from the mid-20th century, providing social support networks and maintaining homeland connections. “Montemilonesi nel Mondo” emerged from this tradition, formalising the bonds between the global diaspora and the village community. The organisation has grown to promote not just the human community but also the architectural, gastronomic, and natural heritage of the Montemilone area.
What you see
Montemilone itself offers a typical Lucanian hilltop townscape: a compact historic nucleus with stone-built houses, a parish church, and panoramic views across rolling wheat fields toward the Ofanto river valley and, on clear days, toward the Puglia lowlands. The association’s activities bring visitors into contact with local cuisine (including typical Basilicata staples such as peperoni cruschi, lagane e ceci, and local wines), folk music, and rural crafts. Association events often take place in and around the communal spaces of the village.
Cultural significance
Associations like “Montemilonesi nel Mondo” play a crucial role in sustaining cultural memory and identity for communities whose populations have shrunk through emigration. By promoting cultural tourism and diaspora engagement, they contribute to the economic and social resilience of small towns that might otherwise face depopulation and heritage loss. The association represents a broader pattern of Lucanian cultural pride found across the diaspora worldwide.
