Overview
The Ferrovia Circumetnea is a 950 mm narrow-gauge regional railway in Sicily, constructed between 1895 and 1898 to encircle Mount Etna. Randazzo is a town and comune at the northern foot of the volcano, around 70 kilometres northwest of Catania. It is the nearest town to the summit of Etna and one of the points from which the ascent may be made.
History
The railway was built in the late 19th century to link the rural towns that ring Etna, isolated by lava fields and rugged terrain. Construction of the 950 mm gauge line was completed between 1895 and 1898. Randazzo, long an important centre on the northern slopes, became a principal station on the route and has remained in service through the volcano’s repeated eruptions.
What you see
From Randazzo the train runs across the dark basalt landscape of Etna’s northern flank, with the volcano’s summit looming close by. The narrow-gauge track and modest period station reflect the line’s late-19th-century engineering. The route passes lava fields, woodland and farmland on its loop around the mountain.
Cultural significance
The Circumetnea is among Italy’s most celebrated narrow-gauge railways and a piece of living industrial heritage. Randazzo’s position as the town closest to Etna’s summit makes its station a natural gateway for visitors exploring the volcano.
Practical information
Operated as a regional railway around Mount Etna. Check the official website for current timetables, fares and service updates.
Getting there
