Postignano Castle
Postignano Castle is a fortified medieval hamlet (castello) in the comune of Sellano, in the mountains of southeastern Umbria, Italy. Like many castelli of the region, it is a compact hilltop settlement of stone houses clustered for defence rather than a single fortress. After long abandonment, the village was the subject of an extensive restoration that returned its houses and lanes to use, making it one of Umbria’s best-known recovered borghi.

Overview
Postignano is a fortified hamlet in the territory of Sellano, in the Valnerina-facing hills of Umbria. Its houses rise in tiers on a steep slope, forming a single defensive cluster typical of the region’s medieval castelli. The village is reached along mountain roads through wooded countryside.
History
Postignano grew up in the medieval period as a fortified settlement, with stone dwellings packed tightly on the hillside for protection. Over the twentieth century the village was progressively abandoned as residents left the upland countryside. In recent decades it became the focus of a careful restoration that conserved its historic form while adapting the houses for new uses.
What you see
Visitors find a compact cluster of stone houses, narrow lanes and stepped passages climbing the slope, crowned by the higher structures of the old castle settlement. The surviving medieval fabric has been consolidated and restored. The hamlet commands views over the surrounding Umbrian hills.
Cultural significance
Postignano is often cited as a model of how an abandoned Italian hilltop village can be conserved and brought back to life. It illustrates the architectural heritage of Umbria’s fortified rural settlements.
Practical information
