Overview

Bihar Museum was conceived to complement and eventually succeed the older Patna Museum, and more than one hundred artefacts were transferred from the Patna Museum to the new institution at its opening. The museum is organised into six permanent galleries plus a children’s museum, covering Bihar’s history from prehistoric times through the Maurya and Gupta empires to the medieval and modern periods. It operates under the Government of Bihar and is one of the most ambitiously designed cultural institutions built in India in the 21st century.

History

The Bihar government commissioned the museum in the 2000s as part of a broader cultural infrastructure programme for the state. The design was awarded to the Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki’s firm, Maki and Associates, in partnership with Patna-based Opolis Architects — a rare example of an international architectural commission for a state museum in India. The children’s museum and entrance areas opened first in August 2015; the remaining galleries, including the historical and archaeological sections, were inaugurated in October 2017. More than one hundred objects were transferred from the Patna Museum to anchor the permanent collection.

What you see

The permanent galleries trace Bihar’s history from prehistoric rock art through the Maurya period (the empire of Chandragupta and Ashoka, centred on Patna) and the Gupta golden age, to medieval Islamic culture and the modern state. The children’s gallery uses interactive displays to engage younger visitors with Bihar’s archaeological heritage. The building itself is a landmark of 21st-century museum architecture in India, with its layered volumes and landscaped water features designed to evoke the Gangetic plain environment.

Cultural significance

Bihar was the heartland of the Maurya Empire, the birthplace of Buddhism (Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda) and Jainism (Vaishali, Pawapuri), and the site of the first great Indian university at Nalanda. The museum gives this extraordinary heritage a contemporary institutional home commensurate with its global importance, and serves as the primary gateway for international visitors seeking to understand Bihar’s contribution to world civilisation.
